Our Goals
Unless you have experienced it first hand, it is hard to fully appreciate the feelings of someone who is informed by an ophthalmologist that he or she has macular degeneration and that nothing can be done about it. Most people are not only devastated by this information but have never even heard the term before. Thus our association's vital aim is both to aid all such disheartened sufferers and to disseminate as widely as possible the pertinent facts to the public at large.
Members are encouraged to share their own macular experiences, emotional as well as visual. We don't expect people who have lost important segments of their eyesight just to "accept" this new condition. We stand ready to help them cope.
The Association uses radio and television broadcasts, newspaper publicity, the internet, E-mail and direct mail to public and private social service agencies to spread the word and to evoke responses from those whose visual ability has suddenly become either threatened or disrupted. Many retinal specialists and hospitals have sponsored educational seminars in cities across the country, shedding greater light upon our particular but little-known ocular malady.
Eye Donor Project
Our long-range objective to establish an eye bank devoted exclusively to research on macular problems is now in progress. We are the only organization solely concerned with the entire macular spectrum, including juvenile maculopathy. Members and their families are encouraged to make a posthumous donation of their eyes for special laboratory study devoted to macular degeneration alone.
You can help us by telling your friends, your community newspapers, your eye doctors and social agencies about our presence and our continuing willingness to extend a helping hand to all those who can benefit from contacting us.
Our telephone hotline number is (212) 605-3719.
