About The Macula Foundation
The Macula Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization was established in 1978 to support basic and clinical research in vitreous, retinal and macular diseases, a major cause of blindness of all age groups. For example, edema of the macula accounts for more than 90% of the severe vision loss in patients with diabetic retinopathy, and of course, age-related macular degeneration is the most significant disorder related to severe loss in patients over the age of fifty years.
Since it was formed, the Foundation has distributed grants and awards of approximately 15 million dollars earmarked for important clinical and scientific research and related teaching programs. Numerous research projects have been overwhelmingly successful as a result of a careful selection process by the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Council which is composed of a celebrated and elite corps of leaders in the field of macular disease.
Scientists and clinicians supported by the Foundation have made significant advances in research, which have been documented in the prestigious publications, principally peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals. The contributions have added to the impressive library of meaningful research supported by The Macula Foundation, Inc. through its world-renowned investigators.
