Geographic Atrophy

Geographic atrophy is a distinct, sharply delineated area of depigmentation, or loss, of the retinal pigment epithelial layer (RPE). This nourishing layer beneath the sensory retina is a single cell thick. Small areas may be lost as a result of drusen regression or a retinal or macular detachment. Geographic atrophy is a hallmark of advanced stage dry AMD.
